Winds of up to 60mph are expected to hit parts of the UK, potentially causing travel disruption just days after heavy rain led to widespread flooding.
The Met Office has issued a yellow rain warning for much of southern England and South Wales, in effect from 4pm on Sunday until 9am on Monday. The warning indicates that further heavy rainfall may result in additional flooding and travel delays.
While London has narrowly escaped the yellow warning, the capital is still forecast to experience heavy rain on Monday.
In the areas under the weather alert, rainfall between 20-30mm is expected over a period of nine to 12 hours on Sunday, with localized areas on higher ground potentially seeing 50-80mm, according to the Met Office.
Met Office meteorologist Becky Mitchell noted that although the forecast doesn’t predict an extreme amount of rain, the recent weather has left river levels high and the ground saturated, increasing the risk of further flooding.
As of Saturday morning, the Environment Agency had issued 48 flood warnings—indicating flooding is expected—and 90 flood alerts, where flooding is possible, across England.
Additionally, a yellow wind warning is in place for southwest England and Wales from 9am Sunday until the end of the day, which could further disrupt travel and local conditions.
